SEGOL Phrases

SEGOL is another Trope that ends phrases:סֶג֒ל

Like TELISHA KETANA, the symbol for the SEGOL Trope only appears at the end of a word.

It is a standard feature of every Chumash that when PASHTA appears words where the accent is not on the last syllable, the PASHTA symbol is repeated on the accented syllable.

This is not so of SEGOL. Older Chumashim typically do not repeat the SEGOL on the accented syllable, while many recently-published Chumashim and the TropeTrainer software do repeat the SEGOL symbol:אֶת-הָרָקִ֒יעַ֒

The same is true of another Trope we will learn in this lesson -- ZARKA:בָאָ֘רֶץ֘

SEGOL Helper Tropes

Unlike any of the phrase-ending Tropes you've learned so far, SEGOL never appears by itself. It is is always helped by the Trope ZARKA:זַרְקא֘

Additionally, SEGOL phrases are helped by one or two MUNACHs, and occasionally by PASHTA, KADMA, MERCHA and TELISHA KETANA.These are the more frequent Trope combinations for a SEGOL phrase:סֶג֒לזַרְקא֘ סֶג֒לזַרְקא֘ מנַ֣ח סֶג֒לזַרְקא֘ מנַ֣ח מנַ֣ח סֶג֒למנַ֣ח זַרְקא֘ סֶג֒לקַדְמָָ֨א מנַ֣ח זַרְקא֘ סֶג֒למנַ֣ח זַרְקא֘ מנַ֣ח סֶג֒למנַ֣ח מנַ֣ח זַרְקא֘ סֶג֒לקַדְמָָ֨א מֵרְכָ֥א זַרְקא֘ מנַ֣ח סֶג֒לְלִישָא-קְטַנָה֩ קַדְמָָ֨א מֵרְכָ֥א זַרְקא֘ מנַ֣ח סֶג֒לPress "Next" in the Lesson Navigator below and learn the melody for the SEGOL phrases.
